Christmas Gifts for 3 to 6 Year Olds: The Honest Guide
Share
Three, four, five or six years old, and you want something under the tree that won't end up in the corner after two days. That's exactly where many Christmas gifts fail: beautifully wrapped, exciting for a moment and forgotten by January. In this guide you won't get a list of 50 ideas, but an honest assessment. What can children actually do with a gift at each age? Which gifts get played with for years? And by when do you need to order so everything arrives in time?
We make RIWI® XXL building blocks, so of course we have an opinion on what belongs under the tree. But we'll also tell you when a different gift is a better fit. The experience in this article comes from the Christmas seasons we have lived through with our customers.
The age matrix: what 3 to 6 year olds really play with at Christmas
A lot happens between a child's third and sixth birthday. A three-year-old stacks, rearranges and above all wants to do things alone. A six-year-old plans entire worlds, negotiates rules with siblings and builds from a plan of their own. A good gift suits the current age and grows with the child for a few years. The following overview helps you sort it out:
| Age | What kids love right now | Good gift direction | How they play with XXL blocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 years | Stacking, knocking over, crawling in and out, movement | Big, sturdy toys without small parts that allow movement | Building and knocking down towers, tunnels, simple dens, first balance paths |
| 4 years | Role play, first ideas of their own, playing along with adults | Open-ended toys that fit into role play | Shop, car, bus, bed for the stuffed animals, obstacle course |
| 5 years | Planned building projects, competitions, playing with friends | Toys for several children that need agreements | Castles with an entrance, ship, races across the course, family sofa |
| 6 years | Own rules, stamina, construction "like the real thing" | Toys with depth that don't feel childish | Big houses with windows, stage, sports station, reading retreat |
What stands out in the table: the building ideas change, the toy stays the same. That is the core of open-ended toys. There is no "right" result, and that's why they get played with differently every year. You can find more on choosing toys for this age in our guide to toys for ages 3 and up.
Gifts for 3-year-olds: big, sturdy and made for moving
At three, children want one thing above all: to do it themselves. They want to carry, push, stack and knock over, preferably a hundred times in a row. Good gifts for 3-year-olds therefore have three qualities:
- No small parts. Anything that fits in the mouth doesn't belong at this age. Large pieces are safer and easier for small hands to grip.
- Sturdy. A three-year-old tests toys thoroughly. He sits on them, throws them over and climbs all over them. A toy that breaks under that treatment is not a good gift.
- Movement instead of watching. Toys that flash and make sounds on their own get boring fast. Toys the child moves themselves stay exciting.
The same applies to boys and girls. If you search for gifts for 3-year-old boys, you'll find lots of vehicles and tool sets; for girls, more dolls and play kitchens. In our experience, children at this age play with anything that gives them room. A tower of XXL building blocks is equally exciting for both, and knocking it over even more so.
Why three-year-olds play differently with XXL blocks than with small ones
Small building blocks demand fine motor skills and patience. With XXL building blocks, building becomes a full-body movement: a RIWI® XXL building block measures 71 × 20 × 10 cm, yet it is made of foam and so is easy for a child aged 3 and up to carry. The child lifts, pushes and balances, and when the tower falls over it's no drama, because the foam gives way softly. At the same time, the blocks support up to 110 kg. A child can sit, lie or climb on their own creation.
For three-year-olds with little space, or who should simply try things out first, the RIWI® mini building blocks are a good start. They are about half the size and can later be combined with the XXL blocks.
Gifts for 4-year-olds: toys that fit into role play
At four, the tower becomes a house, the house a shop and the shop a vet's practice. Role play takes up a lot of space at this age. Children invent stories, hand out roles and need things that can transform.
That's why gifts for 4-year-olds are good when they aren't fixed to a single function. A toy car is a car. Twelve big blocks are a car, a garage, a bus with rows of seats, a bed for the favorite stuffed animal and, in the afternoon, an obstacle course through the living room.
One tip that makes a big difference at this age: play along for half an hour on Christmas Eve. Four-year-olds love it when adults join their game. Once you've shown that the blocks can become a ship, your child will build their own the next day. We've collected more ideas for this age in our article on toys for 4-year-olds.
Gifts for 5-year-olds: building projects, friends and competitions
Five-year-olds plan. They say in advance what they want to build and are disappointed when it doesn't work. They play with other children more often, negotiate rules and love competitions: who is faster across the course? Who builds the tallest tower?
When looking for a gift for a 5-year-old girl, many parents end up with craft kits, jewelry or dollhouses. That can work. But what we've observed in many families is that girls enjoy romping, climbing and building big structures just as much as boys. Roland puts it this way:
"It's not just boys, girls love playing with them too."
Roland, Co-Founder of RIWI®
For five-year-olds, gifts that keep several children busy at once are therefore a good choice. When friends visit or siblings join in, you need enough material to avoid arguments. With building blocks, that means: a few more is better. You'll find more gift ideas for girls this age in our article on creative gifts for 5-year-old girls.
Gifts for 6-year-olds: depth instead of kids' stuff
At six, school is getting closer for many children or has already started. They want to be taken seriously and suddenly find some toys "babyish". At the same time, they have more stamina than ever and can stick with a project for days.
Good gifts for 6-year-olds therefore have depth. They can be played with in complex ways without adults having to explain everything. Large building blocks work surprisingly well here because the structures simply grow along: the tower becomes a house with a window and a door, the wall becomes a stage for the puppet theater, the sofa becomes a reading nook. And when the school day was exhausting, a retreat you built yourself is worth its weight in gold.
Another point that is often underestimated at this age: six-year-olds have a strong urge to move, especially in winter when there's little to do outside. A gift that allows balancing, jumping and climbing indoors helps the whole family through the dark months.
"We already have far too many toys": our honest answer
We hear this sentence every year, and it's justified. Many children's rooms are full, and yet only a fraction of the toys get played with. So the question isn't whether another gift is added, but whether it's one that replaces many others.
Roland has a clear answer:
"With RIWI you have a toy that doesn't just gather dust in the corner but gets played with for years. A toy that keeps you active, where you can do sports, where you can sleep on it, where you can build, where the whole family can play together. And of course you can also use it as a couch."
Roland, Co-Founder of RIWI®
The thinking behind it: one open-ended, large toy takes over the job of many small ones. It is a building set, gym equipment, role-play backdrop and furniture in one. If you want to declutter the children's room, a Christmas gift can also be the occasion to sort things out together with your child and make room for something new.
Three questions help you honestly check, for any gift, whether it will stay in use or gather dust:
- Can the child still find something new to do with it in a year? If the toy has only one function, the answer is usually no.
- Can several children play with it at the same time? Gifts that include siblings and friends get used more often.
- Does it withstand real children's hands? What still looks good after months will keep being played with.

Which set suits which child? Our recommendation
The question we get most often before Christmas: how many blocks do I need? For 3 to 6 year olds, our answer is fairly clear. Roland:
"We recommend a set of 36 XXL building blocks, because you can already do a lot with it and have enough blocks for romping and playing. For two siblings, we recommend a set of 48."
Roland, Co-Founder of RIWI®

Why 36 and not 12? With twelve blocks you can build a small tower, a tunnel or a bench. That's a good start, but children quickly hit limits, especially from age four, when the building ideas get bigger. With 36 blocks you get houses a child fits into, obstacle courses across the whole room and a sofa for movie night.
| Situation | Our recommendation | Price |
|---|---|---|
| One child, little space, first try-out | RIWI® mini, 12 blocks | €49.95 |
| One child, small children's room | RIWI® XXL, 24 blocks | €239.95 |
| One child aged 3 to 6 (our standard recommendation) | RIWI® XXL, 36 blocks | €319.95 |
| Two siblings or lots of visitors | RIWI® XXL, 48 blocks | €399.95 |
Prices incl. VAT as listed in the shop, as of October 2026. You can see the current price and all variants directly at the RIWI® XXL building blocks.
One advantage many only notice later: the system is expandable. If you start with 24 blocks, you can add more for a birthday or the next Christmas. One story from a family touched us especially:
"After Christmas, one child had so much fun with the RIWI blocks that they bought another set with their own pocket money."
Roland, Co-Founder of RIWI®
When a child puts their own savings into a toy they already have, that says more about its play value than any product description.
The favorite combo of grandparents and godparents
Grandparents and godparents often want to give the "big gift" that will be remembered. A set is a good start, but a combination is especially popular. Roland explains which one:
"Most of all the RIWI 36 XXL set with the couch cover. The RIWI Bag is often added too, because exactly 24 blocks fit into a couch cover, and then you have 12 blocks left that fit exactly into the RIWI XXL Bag. That gives you a couch and an ottoman to put your feet up on."
Roland, Co-Founder of RIWI®

The nice thing about this combo: it solves two questions parents often ask. First, where the blocks go when nobody is building. Second, whether the living room will then look like a playground. With the RIWI® 2-in-1 play sofa, 24 blocks become a kids' sofa, and the RIWI® XXL Bag turns the remaining 12 into an ottoman. When it's playtime, the blocks come out. When the day is done, a tidy piece of furniture is back in the room.
| Gift combo | Contents | Price from |
|---|---|---|
| RIWI® XXL, 36 blocks | 36 XXL foam building blocks | €319.95 |
| + RIWI® 2-in-1 play sofa | Cover for 24 blocks, becomes a kids' sofa | €109.95 |
| + RIWI® XXL Bag | Bag for 12 blocks, becomes an ottoman | €39.95 |
| Total | Toy, sofa and ottoman in one | from €469.85 |
Total price = sum of the individual prices incl. VAT, as of October 2026, higher depending on the cover fabric.
Our tip for families with several gift-givers: split the gift. The parents give the set, the grandparents the play sofa, the godmother the bag. That way there is one big shared gift under the tree instead of three small ones competing with each other. You'll find more ideas for the whole family in our best Christmas gift ideas.
Safety: what to look for in toys for ages 3 and up
Christmas gifts are often chosen by looks and price. For toys that children sit on, climb on and sleep on, it pays to take a second look at the testing. Check these points for any large toy for 3 to 6 year olds:
- Age rating: RIWI® building blocks are intended for children ages 3 and up. With every toy, make sure the age rating fits your child.
- Independent testing: RIWI® building blocks are tested by TÜV Austria (certificate ZSTS/APZE/1486) and tested to the European toy standard EN 71.
- Materials: The XXL and mini foam building blocks are certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 (No. 25.3.0293 INNOVATEXT), and the foam is CertiPUR-certified.
- Load capacity: The blocks support up to 110 kg. Children can step on them, and adults can sit down too when playing together.
- Care: The blocks are washable. After a winter full of children's hands, cookie crumbs and cocoa, that's a real argument.
You can view all certificates yourself on our page Certificates & Awards. What else makes foam building blocks what they are, from material to care, is explained in our guide to foam building blocks.
By when should you order to be sure it's under the tree?
This is the question that reaches us daily from mid-November. Roland's honest answer:
"Generally we ship within 1 to 3 working days in the DACH region. But at Christmas we've often seen the parcel carriers overwhelmed, and our parcels aren't exactly the smallest. To be safe, I'd order at the latest a week before, but really right away, because waiting is just risk."
Roland, Co-Founder of RIWI®
There's a second point many don't have on their radar: production has limits too. Last year, individual sets sold out before Christmas because demand was higher than what we could make in time. If you order in October or November, you're on the safe side. If you wait until the last week, you risk that the set you want is no longer available or that the carrier can't deliver it in time.
Our order rule of thumb for Christmas 2026
- Relaxed: Order in October or November. The blocks arrive, and you have time to find a good hiding place.
- Still fine: Order by early December. The carriers are very busy by then, but it usually works out.
- Last sensible deadline: about a week before Christmas Eve, so by Thursday, December 17, 2026. After that the risk rises sharply.
Where do you put the big parcel until Christmas Eve?
One thing up front: the parcels are big, and at Christmas that's an advantage. Roland says the huge box under the Christmas tree goes down extremely well with children. Until then, though, it has to be hidden somewhere. The basement, garage, guest room or grandma and grandpa's home have proven their worth. If you have the parcel delivered to the grandparents, you solve two problems at once: nobody finds it beforehand, and the grandparents can bring it along on Christmas Eve.

Founder's comment
Roland, Co-Founder of RIWI®: "You have a really nice big parcel under the Christmas tree, which goes down extremely well with the kids when there's a big box like that. But I'd order right away, because waiting is just risk."
Roland founded RIWI® together with Nicola. The recommendations in this article come from the experience the RIWI® team has gathered with families, grandparents and daycare centers over many Christmas seasons.
Our conclusion for Christmas with 3 to 6 year olds
The best Christmas gift for children between three and six is one that grows with them. It should delight today and still be played with just as much next winter. Large, open-ended toys manage that, because as children get older it isn't the toy that changes, but what the child makes of it. For one child we recommend the 36 set, for siblings the 48 set, and if you want to give an especially big gift, add the play sofa and bag. Above all, one thing matters: order in time.

Frequently asked questions about Christmas gifts for 3 to 6 year olds
What do you give a 3-year-old for Christmas?
Big, sturdy toys without small parts work well, ones the child uses to move: stacking, knocking over, building tunnels, balancing. XXL foam building blocks do exactly that and get played with differently as the child grows, from tower to house.
From what age are RIWI® building blocks suitable?
RIWI® building blocks are intended for children ages 3 and up.
Which RIWI® set is the right Christmas gift for a child aged 3 to 6?
For one child we recommend the set with 36 XXL building blocks (€319.95 incl. VAT, as of October 2026). It lets you build houses, obstacle courses and a sofa. For two siblings we recommend the 48 set (€399.95).
What is a good gift for a 5-year-old girl?
Five-year-olds love planned building projects, role play and playing with friends. Good gifts keep several children busy at once and allow movement. Girls build and romp just as much as boys.
By when should I order for Christmas?
We usually ship to Germany and Austria within 1 to 3 working days. There is no delivery guarantee by Christmas Eve: before Christmas, though, parcel carriers are often overloaded and individual sets can sell out. Order at the latest a week before Christmas Eve, ideally already in October or November.
Which gift combo suits grandparents or godparents?
The 36 XXL set with the RIWI® 2-in-1 play sofa and the RIWI® XXL Bag is especially popular. 24 blocks become the kids' sofa, the remaining 12 in the bag become an ottoman. Together the combo costs from €469.85 (sum of the individual prices incl. VAT, as of October 2026).
How safe are RIWI® building blocks?
RIWI® building blocks are tested by TÜV Austria (certificate ZSTS/APZE/1486) and tested to EN 71. The XXL and mini foam building blocks are certified to OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 (No. 25.3.0293 INNOVATEXT), and the foam is CertiPUR-certified. The blocks support up to 110 kg and are washable.
We already have a lot of toys. Is a big gift still worth it?
Yes, if it replaces several small toys. XXL building blocks are a building set, gym equipment, role-play backdrop and kids' sofa in one and get played with for years. Christmas is also a good occasion to sort things out together with your child.
